Beautiful 19th-century Bible pocket, gold at the edges, in a leather cover with a silver clasp featuring a sword, heart, cross.
The motif of a sword, heart and cross is primarily a Christian symbol that represents the suffering of Jesus on the cross and the "seven sorrows" of Mary, with the sword piercing her heart symbolizing her sorrow. It is also associated with love, faith and strength, sometimes as a religious jewel.
Hallmarks: Silver content: Walking Lion with 2 (1814-1953) = 2nd fineness 0.833, Assay office (Minerva head with D=Rotterdam), Year letter D = 1888 and Master mark GH = Gerrit Herfst, Rotterdam 1850-1903. Published by the Nederlandsche Bijbel-Compagnie in Amsterdam J. Brandt and Son and in Haarlem Johannes Enschedé and Zonen 1884.
