Artur Pleva (born in 1903) was an important Czechoslovak artist and designer, known primarily for his fundamental contribution to glass design during the Art Deco period. His fame is tied in particular to the collaboration with the renowned glassworks Curt Schlevogt in the 1930s.
Pleva used period molds and age-old techniques to create handmade works characterized by extraordinary details and contrasts between glossy and matte elements.
His works continue to be produced or traded on the collectors’ market, representing the excellence of Czech glassmaking of the 20th century.
The Vase "Ingrid": It is one of his best-known pieces. Made in malachite glass (a particular opaque glass emerald-green veined), it features bas-relief decorations with nude female figures. It is an iconic piece collected worldwide.
Curt Schlevogt initially founded the company to export glass beads and buttons.
It was his son, Henry Günther Schlevogt, who transformed the business by focusing on high-quality art glass, influenced also by his father-in-law Heinrich Hoffmann (who had collaborated with René Lalique).
The Ingrid collection, named in honor of Henry’s daughter, the line became famous for the use of opaque glass pastes that imitate hard stones such as malachite (striped emerald green), lapis lazuli (blue) and jade.
The Schlevogt-signed pieces received the Grand Prix at the Paris World Exhibition of 1937. Today they are highly sought-after by collectors;
Height 25 cm; diameter at the top 9 cm; at the center about 19 cm; at the base 10 cm. Weight of each vase 1.7 kg.
