Description from the seller
These two impressive manganese-colored earthenware lidded vases belong together and are mirror images of each other. The two large vases were made in 1981 in Gouda by Plateelbakkerij GeWi (Nijhuis brothers)—and specifically by K.J. van Eik, one of the brothers. He decorated the vases by hand. This factory was active only for a relatively short period from 1978 to 1984, and hand-painted pottery from them is therefore relatively rare. GeWi is an abbreviation of the first names of the brothers Gerard and Willem Nijhuis. Before starting their own company, they had gained extensive experience at other well-known Gouda posset kilns. GeWi produced earthenware that closely resembled the traditional Gouda plateel style, often with floral or abstract decorations painted by hand under a glaze. The vases are each 46.5 cm tall, including the lid, and at the top the vases have a diameter of 15 cm. A sheet of paper is affixed at the top to protect the rim; this can be removed if desired. Both vases and lids are completely intact and have no chips, hairlines, or fritting. The glaze is also fully intact everywhere. The weight of one vase is 2,030 grams (including the lid) and the other 1,745 grams (including the lid). They will be carefully packed and shipped, but pickup is also possible.
