Statue reliquary figure of the African Kota people from Gabon in wood covered with brass plates - Eyes are bone -
Gaps due to xylophagous insects on the right side of the base, see detail photo and photos of the lower part of the reliquary.
The Kota people live mainly in the east of Gabon and in the west of Congo.
Many Kota reliquary figures exist. They share common characteristics: a face made from metal sheets plated over a wooden core and a handle-shaped diamond.
The reliquary baskets or "bwété" were kept at the back of the chief's hut. The "bwété" were venerated by offerings and prayers whose aim was to bring prosperity to the clan. At the top of the "bwété" was placed a reliquary statue with a highly stylized body in the shape of a diamond and a head covered with metal.
