Minitrix N - 12829 - Train set (1) - 3-piece ICM "Koploper" set - NS
Unit number 4097
Tested and working
Front- and rear-signals alternating direction
2 axles driven
Intercity rolling stock (shortly ICM with the equipment name Plan Z) is a type of trainset from NS Reizigers that is mainly used in intercity services. The train has the nickname Koploper because of the cab-through nose beneath the elevated driver’s cab, which creates a walkable connection between the trainsets (unique for Dutch rolling stock). The through-cab proved to be prone to malfunctions and was removed during the modernization of 137 of the 144 trainsets in 2005-2011. The revised trainsets are also called Intercity Materieel Modern (ICMm). ICMm has been taken out of service since 2022. The intention is that all trainsets will be sidelined by 2030.
The model was designed by Evert Endt from the design studio of designer Raymond Loewy. The first seven (prototype) trainsets entered service in 1977. The majority of the trains built between 1983 and 1994 were still in daily operation on the Dutch railway network in 2023. The ICMm, together with the VIRM and the DDZ, forms the main rolling stock on the connections between the Randstad and the north and east of the country.
