Description from the seller
Elegant and classic marble pedestal, also commonly known as a torchère or sculpture stand.
The piece is carved from veined white marble. Italian carrara marble.
It features a heavy grey-and-white "brecciated" or mottled pattern throughout the stone. The aging on the base suggests it could be an antique, late 19th to early 20th century.
The design follows a traditional Neoclassical structure:
The Top (Capital): A square, flat surface designed to hold a bust, a heavy vase, or a piece of bronze sculpture.
The Shaft: The most striking feature is the solomonic (twisted) column design. The shaft is divided into two sections by a central ring (annulets), adding a decorative rhythm to the height.
The Base: It sits on an octagonal plinth (eight-sided base), which provides stability for heavy objects. Just above the base is an ornate, gadrooned (ribbed) bulbous section that transitions into the column.
These pedestals were staples in grand Victorian and Edwardian homes. Today, they are typically used for:
Displaying Fine Art: Elevating a marble bust or a bronze statue to eye level.
Botanical Accents: Holding a large fern or a trailing plant in an entryway or sunroom.
Symmetry: They are often found in pairs to flank a doorway or a large fireplace.
Dimensions: Height 99 cm; Top plate 23 x 23 cm; Octagonal base 23 x 23 cm, circumference of twisted sections 29 cm, and low flared bowl circumference 55 cm.
Weight: 18.2 kg
