A Tlatilco Terracotta Anthropomorphic Head, Central Mexico, 12th to 6th Century BC.

Small and finely modelled terracotta head with a distinctive rounded headdress or cap, broad face, deeply incised eyes, prominent nose and expressive mouth. The piece displays the characteristic robust modelling and stylization of the Preclassic Tlatilco culture, with an attractive beige to light brown surface and natural mineral encrustation.
Figurines and heads of this type were commonly used as amulets, votive offerings or components of larger composite figures during the Preclassic period in the Valley of Mexico.
