Peridot, also known as chrysolite, is a particularly pure variety of the mineral olivine. The light-green, transparent mineral is used as a gemstone.
Peridot is the magnesium-rich variety of olivine (forsterite) with a composition approaching Mg2SiO4. Its crystals are orthorhombic, and its hardness is slightly lower than that of quartz.
Peridot is of a light green color with a range from yellow-green to olive-green. Brownish varieties are also known. Peridot is sometimes confused with emerald and other green gemstones, such as chrysoberyl, diopside, moldavite, as well as garnet (demantoid), quartz (prasiolite, prasem) and tourmaline varieties (chromolith, verdelite).
Peridot is already mentioned in the Old Testament (as pitdah), and in ancient Rome the stone was valued as an “Evening Emerald” because it can be easily lit by lamp light. In the Middle Ages, peridot often adorned church jewelry; presumably, peridot stones were brought to Europe by Crusaders. The stone has been attributed with healing powers, as well as the power to ward off evil spirits.
