Description from the seller
Antique Wall Shelf "Black Forest" – Hand-Carved Walnut Wood – Chamois – Brienz, Switzerland, late 19th Century
Splendid example of vintage Swiss craftsmanship, this wall shelf in the "Black Forest" style represents a chamois of the Alps carved with extraordinary realism.
The piece is entirely hand-carved in walnut wood, with an original patina that enhances its anatomical details.
The animal emerges from an elaborate ornament of foliage and interwoven branches, typical of the Brienz master carvers' productions from the period 1880-1900, later disseminated in continental Europe, especially Germany and the Alpine regions.
The quality of the carving is evident in the texture of the fur, the curvature of the horns, and the expressiveness of the gaze.
