Description from the seller
Beautiful and very large tribal mask from the Ivory Coast, dating from the 1970s.
Hand-carved in wood, the mask features an elongated anthropomorphic face with heavy-lidded eyes, a prominent geometric nose, and a striking ribbed surface carved in rhythmic concentric patterns that create a powerful sculptural presence.
The minimalist facial features and elongated proportions are characteristic of West African ceremonial art, giving the piece a strong modernist aesthetic while preserving its traditional tribal identity.
Originally intended for ceremonial or decorative use, the mask displays a beautiful aged patina, visible handcrafted workmanship, and natural wear consistent with age and use.
A stable fracture is visible on the upper section, as shown in the photographs, but the structure remains solid and secure. The mask is fitted with a hanging wire for wall display, though it can also stand upright as a freestanding sculptural object.
An impressive decorative and ethnographic piece, ideal for collectors of African tribal art, mid-century interiors, brutalist décor, and Wunderkammer collections.
Dimensions:
97.5 × 33.5 × 14 cm.
