19th century – France – Walnut wood and brass-inlaid kidney-shaped étagère
Restoration project
France, ca. 1880
Elegant kidney-shaped étagère from France, dating to circa 1880 (19th century). This refined piece is crafted from walnut wood and richly decorated with brass inlay and an openwork brass gallery around the top surface. The top surface also features a decorative marquetry image with an Asian water scene.
The étagère consists of three levels, supported by turned columns with brass accents, and rests on slender legs. The whole has a graceful, classical appearance that is characteristic of French furniture making from the late 19th century.
Condition:
This is a renovation/restoration project. A few small pieces of brass inlay are missing, and one of the decorative ornaments/pinnacles (there is a replacement available elsewhere, in another style) on the top surface is no longer present. Additionally, there are signs of wear appropriate to age and use.
A charming and decorative piece with much potential after restoration.
