Description from the seller
Nigeria
Ifé
African bronze
Height: 330 mm
Width: 265 mm
Depth: 20 mm
Weight: 2650 g
Technique: lost-wax casting (unique piece)
Plaque depicting a king or a horseman. A coating plaque cast in the lost-wax process, most likely representing a war chief or an emissary, and in any case a high-ranking dignitary of the royal court, bearing the superimposed long coral bead necklaces and a leopard tooth necklace turned backwards, characteristic attributes of the court of the Oba, reigning (or king) of the old Benin Kingdom.
The art of Benin is described as courtly art because it is closely associated with the king, known as the Oba. The tradition of bronze court objects from Ifé dates back to the 14th century. These rectangular altars were topped with heads, statues, carved ivory tusks, bells and staffs. They served to commemorate an oba and to contact his spirit.
