Description from the seller

Rare Chinese rectangular inkstone engraved with a “lotus” in Duan stone with its box (Huang-huali).

The rectangular inkstone is carved with a lotus in the sunken reservoir; the reverse is engraved with a poetic inscription, followed by the signature “shui zhu cun ren - 水竹邨人”.

The inkstone comes from Xu Shichang, the second president of the Republic of China.

The wooden box and lid are possibly Huang Huali.

Xu Shichang (Chinese: 徐世昌; courtesy name: shui zhu cun ren - 水竹邨人, Juren - 菊人; 20 October 1855 – 5 June 1939) was a Chinese politician who served as president of China from 10 October 1918 to 2 June 1922.

In 1918, Xu Shichang was elected as the second president of the Republic of China with the support of the Anfu Parliament controlled by Duan Qirui. A member of the Anhui clique, he was the only civilian to hold the presidency of the Beiyang government; his presidency was also the longest of the Warlord Era. Previously, he had been Minister of the Cabinet during the Qing dynasty.

19th / 20th century.
Dimensions: 21.5 × 13 × 2.6 cm.

Good condition, with a few small chips.
