the Ngil secret judiciary, once active in the equatorial forests of Gabon. Appearing at dusk, this society conducted investigations into witchcraft. Its members wore large oblong masks covered with white kaolin, with eye openings symbolized by two small slits and no mouth opening, to preserve the anonymity of voices and faces. The stylized scarifications and geometric shapes of these masks deeply marked 20th-century artists, foremost Picasso, fascinated by the Fang mask from the Derain collection, now housed at the center.
