Description from the seller
A very fine Near Eastern terracotta chalice, featuring a wide, shallow dish with convex curving walls and an slightly inverted rim. The interior displays a central raised ring. Three curving stems develop from beneath the dish, meeting at a concave base. The piece was covered in a red-brown pigment with remnants of the paint still visible on the surface. Earthy encrustations, scratches and general wear feature to the surface. Some chips to the rim. Repairs to the base with slight cracks visible to the surface.
Ancient Near Eastern artistic production is characterised by finely potted, high fired terracotta vessels, usually enriched by dark pigmented geometric or zoomorphic decorations. Such vessels would have been produced to store food, but also as burial goods to be placed with the deceased in the tomb. Although the first examples of Ancient Near Eastern pottery production display simple shapes and stylised decorative motives, terracotta wares evolved, embracing aesthetics driven by all the cultures which entered into contact with the Near East.
Measurements: (circa) W 23.8cm x H 20.3cm
Provenance: Acquired 1980-2015. Ex Abelita family collection.
