Description from the seller
Illuminated sign, part of the furnishings of an old clock shop in Milan
Raised lettering
History: The company was founded in 1832 in Saint-Imier by Auguste Agassiz with the name Agassiz & Compagnie and later assumed its current denomination in 1867 after the owner of a plot of land in a locality known as Les Longines purchased it, on which the entrepreneur built his watch factory. The Longines name was adopted, together with the emblem of the winged hourglass, by Auguste Agassiz’s grandson, Ernest Francillon (whose initials[1] were registered in 1889 and long displayed on the inside of the case backs and are still used today as decoration on these). Francillon, son of Agassiz’s sister, also contributed around the 1860s to making the Maison a true manufacturer, capable of producing in-house all the components of the watches.
