The mineral charoite (also tscharoit or charoit) is a very rarely occurring chain silicate from the silicate mineral class. It crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system with the general chemical composition (K,Na)5(Ca,Ba,Sr)8[(OH,F)|Si6O16|(Si6O15)2] · n H2O[5]. The elements potassium, sodium, calcium, barium and strontium listed in the round brackets as well as inside the square brackets the hydroxide ion and fluorine can substitute for each other in the formula, but always in the same proportion relative to the other components of the mineral.
Charoite forms translucent to opaque, massive or fibrous aggregates in violet and white banding, where the bands are interwoven and may contain dark inclusions. Charoite is highly sought after as a gemstone.
