Description from the seller

Russian Orthodox Icon of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker with Brass Oklad – Tempera on Wood – Russia – 19th century

Antique Russian Orthodox icon depicting Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker (Nicholas of Myra), one of the most venerated saints in Eastern Christianity. The saint is shown frontally in episcopal vestments, holding an open Gospel book and giving a traditional blessing gesture.

The icon is painted in tempera on wood with a richly decorated gilt brass oklad featuring finely engraved floral and ornamental motifs. The halo and border are elaborately embossed, framing the painted central image and enhancing the icon’s ceremonial appearance.

The composition includes traditional side figures of Christ and the Virgin Mary, associated with Saint Nicholas iconography. The original painted panel beneath the oklad remains visible, showing warm tones and delicate detailing characteristic of Russian icon painting from the 19th century.

The reverse retains the original wooden construction with two old horizontal battens.

Origin: Russia
Period: 19th century
Material: Tempera on wood with gilt brass oklad

Condition:
Good antique condition with age-related craquelure, wear, small paint losses, oxidation and patina to the metal cover, and traces of historical use. Minor wear and restorations visible consistent with age. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they are part of the description.
