Description from the seller
Miniature silver-gilt box in the shape of a pumpkin – late 19th / early 20th century
Elegant and refined miniature box made of silver with gilded interior, crafted in a charming stylized pumpkin shape, a typology highly valued within European decorative arts of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The lid features an extraordinary sculptural relief with a naturalistic composition of leaves and an ornamental bird, while the body displays a richly designed vegetal relief decoration. The interior preserves an attractive gilded finish that provides contrast and refinement.
During the Historicist and Art Nouveau periods, small decorative boxes inspired by natural elements — fruits, vegetables, flowers and animals — intended to hold small personal objects, jewelry, sweets, perfumes or powders — were especially popular.
By style and artistic execution it can be attributed to continental European production, circa 1880–1910.
