Napoleon III Antique Matchbox - Boulle Marquetry Tortoiseshell & Brass
Description of the item
Rare and elegant 19th-century matchbox (match holder), Napoleon III style.
This beautiful display piece testifies to the refinement of smokers’ accessories of the era. It features a superb Boulle-style marquetry on its lid, composed of thin brass strips inlaid on a red-tinted tortoiseshell background.
• Exterior details: The center of the lid bears a medallion with an intertwined monogram. The edges are outlined by a border in carved bronze or gilded brass.
• Functionality: The box opens to a blackened wooden compartment. The base is equipped with its original striker (rough red surface) to strike the matches.
• Condition: Good overall condition for an object of this age. Presence of authentic patina and slight signs of use that add to its charm. Small loss of brass and wood (See photos for detail).
