Azerbaijan Moghan carpet woven by Shahsavan nomads from the Moghan region, circa 1880, wool on wool, approximately 3.13 x 1.11 m, in good, restored condition.
Description from the seller
An antique Caucasian Moghan rug (Southeast Caucasus).
A hand-knotted rug from the Shahsavan nomads of this region, in gallery format.
Beautiful natural plant-based colors.
The blue field features seven octagonal medallions with different field colors and motifs.
In the center of the medallions are cross-shaped flowers with side branches and diagonal crosses.
The blue field is very densely and intricately decorated with various swastikas, flowers and rosettes. The light brown main border is decorated with arrow motifs, rosettes and small cross-shaped flowers, flanked by two lighter secondary borders with geometric flowers and curved tendrils.
Period: circa 1880.
Dimensions: approx. 3.13 x 1.11 meters (approx. 10.4 x 3.8 feet).
Material: Wool on wool with beautiful natural colors.
Condition: Uneven pile with low spots and wear (see photos).
The octagon at the bottom is divided in two, narrowed, and then sewn back together.
The ends have been shortened and then secured.
Both borders show signs of aging and use (see photos).
Overall impression: good and acceptable.
