Description from the seller
Beautiful slice of agate with display stand
Due to its abundance and the ease with which it could be worked, agate was one of the most commonly used materials in antiquity in the art of sculpture on hard stone. It has been found on many ancient sites in Italy and Greece, testifying to its widespread use in these civilizations.
Minoan culture, in Crete, perfected this art of hard stone sculpture and was renowned throughout the ancient world. Archaeological discoveries at the Knossos site in Crete perfectly testify to the importance of the role of agate from the Bronze Age. In addition to its ornamental use, agate was also used as a leather polishing tool for centuries.
In China, the Tang Dynasty produced many objects, vases and decorations in agate.
This art of sculpture persisted through the ages and many decorative objects were made, such as pins, brooches or jewelry, paper knives, inkstands, marbles and seals.
To this day, agate is used for decorative ornamentation and is cut as cabochons, cameos or beads.
It was in the Idar-Oberstein region, in Germany, that this art became industrialized. Following large quantities of Brazilian agates, they globalized this activity in the mid-20th century. Colorful agate beads were then sold worldwide.
