West Africa, Ghana, Ashanti people (Asante), toward the 20th century. Magnificent hand-carved wooden hair comb and ornament, with long teeth and surmounted by a figurative handle. The teeth of the comb point downward from a rectangular body forming the lower part or hips of the handle. Two drawn arms rest on the hips; the upper body features small round breasts and a long neck supporting a round and imposing head. The stylized face is carved in relief, with fine incisions on the cheeks evoking tattoos or ritual scars.
