Description from the seller
Russian Orthodox travel icon / triptych with saints and email – 19th century
Beautiful Russian Orthodox brass travel icon in triptych form, richly decorated with multicolored enamel and detailed religious depictions in relief. This type of foldable devotional icon was used in the 19th century as a personal prayer object and could easily be taken along during travels or pilgrimages.
Description
The central panel shows a standing holy bishop, probably Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, recognizable by his blessing gesture and the Gospel book in his hand. Surrounding the main figure are decorative floral motifs and geometric patterns filled with dark blue and white enamel.
The two side panels feature smaller religious scenes and saints’ representations, executed in fine relief. Above the middle panel there is an additional depiction of Christ or a holy figure within a decorative frame.
The combination of brass, contrasting enamel, and refined detailing gives the object a rich appearance. Such Orthodox travel icons were produced in specialized Russian workshops and were beloved among believers as portable altarpieces or protective icons.
The object has a fine ancient patina and the enamel shows light wear and small irregularities appropriate to its age.
