AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Ancient and rare Fang mask collected in the 1930s by a French family in the heart of the forested regions of Gabon and the Rio Muni area in Equatorial Guinea.

This anthropomorphic mask shows a remarkable aesthetic force typical of the great Fang traditions of old, where the balance of volumes and the sobriety of the lines convey a deep spiritual power.

The triangular face with angular contours is animated by a narrow, penetrating gaze reinforced by small perforations beneath the eyes, probably intended to enhance the ritual effect during ceremonies.

The mouth, slightly open and carved with intensity, seems suspended between sacred speech and ancestral invocation, giving the whole piece an especially expressive presence.

The surface preserves a magnificent natural pigmentation of origin, alternating dark and light areas obtained through ancient techniques mixing vegetal pigments, fumigation, and prolonged ritual use.

The central motif engraved on the forehead evokes symbolic scarifications and identity signs inherent to Fang initiatory traditions.

The top of the mask still retains traces of plant fibers, testimony to its authenticity and ceremonial use.

Together, it presents an extraordinary patina of antiquity, fully coherent with an old collection made in the 1930s.

This type of mask was used in initiatory societies linked to the cult of ancestors and ritual practices intended to maintain the link between the visible world and the world of protective spirits.

Through its powerful expression, its notable origin, and its ancient provenance, this work constitutes a beautiful testament to Fang ritual arts from Equatorial Africa.
