Description from the seller
This is Showa, a black-and-white photobook photographed by Saku Sawatari, featuring actress Hiroko Isayama as the model. Published by Takarajimasha in 1994, this hardcover volume combines Sawatari’s photography with text written by Hiroko Isayama herself.
Saku Sawatari is one of Japan’s notable photographers, known for works such as Alice and Nadia. In this book, he photographs Isayama in private interiors, city streets, rooftops, and other everyday spaces, creating a quiet yet intense portrait of her presence. The title Showa suggests a strong connection to the mood and atmosphere of the Japanese Showa era, and the monochrome images give the book a raw, cinematic quality.
The contents are bold and memorable, including nude photographs taken on the street and scenes on a rooftop, as well as other highly expressive images. Rather than relying only on shock value, the book uses soft light, deep shadow, and a grainy atmosphere to bring out both sensuality and a strong sense of time and place. With Isayama’s own writing included, this volume can be enjoyed not simply as a nude photobook, but as a collaborative work between a photographer and an actress.
Regarding condition, there is staining on the top edge and light foxing on the blank page inside the front cover. Otherwise, the book is in very good condition and can be read without issue. A protective plastic sleeve for the cover is included.
