Description from the seller
Rare first edition, with a signed inscription from the author; Katrin Fridriks
This is her first monograph, now out of print.
Biographie : Born in 1974 in Reykjavik (Iceland), Fridriks lives and works in Luxembourg. Her work blends natural forces (her Icelandic roots), organic energy, explosive abstraction and Japanese calligraphy.
The “Stendhal syndrome” refers to a psychological phenomenon: an emotional and sensory overload felt in the face of a profusion of artworks or beauty.
Fridriks has conceived a major installation linked to this concept: according to Arrested Motion, the piece “Perception of the Stendhal Syndrome vs Gene&Ethics – Master Prism” is equipped with a suspended oversized magnifying glass (170 × 70 cm) that allows the viewer to zoom almost infinitely into an abstract painting, creating perceptual distortion and an almost “ill” sensation of contemplation.
There is a background essay by Dr. Klaus Speidel, which explores the conceptual aspect of the syndrome and how Fridriks translated it into an artistic form.
This book covers about 13 years of the artist’s development, with particular emphasis on her “Stendhal Syndrome” installations (2014), her explosive black-and-white drippings, and her “Riding Awareness” works.
It includes:
- numerous color images: abstract paintings, close-ups, installation sketches, exhibition views, photos of the installation at the Venice Biennale, etc.
- It also documents the “in situ” experience: how viewers interact with the installation, the architectural dimensions, and the visual/psychological effect observed.
- Edition: First edition, Skira
- Language: English
- Binding: Hardcover with dust jacket
- Dimensions: 31 × 31 cm
- Pages: 246
Condition: Excellent, clean interior, without annotations or dog-eared pages.
Cover corners still sharp. Jacket with some minor marks, slightly rubbed at the corners.
See the photos included in the description.
Very fine copy.
Will be shipped in a careful, sturdy, and trackable package.
