André Penteado is a Brazilian photographic artist born in 1970 in Brazil; he lives and works in São Paulo.
Since 2007, André regularly produces works in the field of photography and his work is mainly oriented toward significant events in Brazilian history.
The artist has held numerous solo and group exhibitions in Brazil and abroad.
In 2013, he won the Pierre Verger Photography Prize, one of the main national prizes in visual arts.
In 2017, he was a finalist for the Conrado Wessel Photography Prize with “French Mission.”
In 2019, he won the Chico Albuquerque Photography Prize with the work “Cabanagem.”
Missão Francesa (French Mission) is the name by which the group of French artists who arrived in Rio de Janeiro in March 1816 became known, with the aim of establishing in the country an artistic education modeled on the French Academy, which led to the creation of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts of France.
Two hundred years after the group’s arrival, André Penteado photographed several places related to this history, such as:
the National Museum of Fine Arts, the Fine Arts School of UFRJ, Cascatinha Taunay, Casa França Brasil, the D. João VI Museum, the Grandjean de Montigny Manor, the Brazilian Historical and Geographical Institute.
Also featured in this work are descendants of this expedition as well as students and professors of the École des Beaux-Arts.
