Appuie-nuque Yaka from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a Yaka-culture object from a private collection, measuring 11 cm high, 1 cm deep and 1 cm wide, weighing 1 g, in excellent condition, sold without a stand.
Description from the seller
Bel appui-nuque Yaka of the Democratic Republic of Congo, this work elegantly blends everyday functionality with artistic expression. Used to preserve elaborate hairstyles during sleep while protecting the head from direct contact with the ground, this type of object held an important place in the life of notables and people of high status.
This exemplar stands out for its particularly harmonious composition. The upper plateau, delicately curved to fit the nape of the neck, rests on a remarkable sculpted structure depicting two facing birds. In many African traditions, the bird is associated with the spiritual world, communication with ancestors, and invisible forces. Their symmetrical representation gives the whole a remarkable visual balance while reinforcing its symbolic reach.
The sculpture testifies to great technical mastery. The volumes are sober and powerful, while the finely incised wings add rhythm and refinement to the composition. The birds’ heads, treated with great sensitivity, fit perfectly within the overall architecture of the object. This search for balance between geometric forms and naturalistic evocation is one of the most appreciated qualities of Yaka art.
The beautiful dark, polished patina, acquired over time through use and repeated handling, highlights the quality of the wood and enhances the reliefs of the carving. The soft wear observable on some parts further strengthens the authentic character of this old piece.
As both a utilitarian object, a symbol of prestige, and a sculpture of high aesthetic quality, this Yaka headrest perfectly illustrates the ability of Central African artists to transform everyday objects into true works of art. An elegant and refined piece, particularly appealing for the purity of its lines and the poetry of its animal-decoration.
