Description from the seller

Anthropomorphic neckrest, Chokwe – Angola. This elegant antique neckrest is a remarkable testimony to Chokwe classical sculpture. The kneeling female figure, dignifiedly supporting the curved crossbeam, is treated with great sobriety, while the face with half-closed eyes and delicately carved features expresses calm and serenity. The whole is sublimed by an exceptional chestnut-brown patina, deeply polished and softened by decades of use, where the natural wear reveals the piece’s age and authenticity.

Beyond its utilitarian function, intended to preserve elaborate hairstyles during sleep, the neckrest held an important place in Chokwe daily life and symbolism. A personal prestige object, it accompanied its owner throughout life and could be passed down as a precious heirloom. The quality of its sculpture, the elegance of its proportions, and especially its remarkable patina of use, acquired over time and through handling, make this specimen particularly appealing to any aficionado of ancient African art.
