Masque Mwana Pwevo, an original Chokwe mask from Angola, dating to the mid-20th century, with a 21 cm height, 1 cm width and 1 cm depth, weighing 1 g, in excellent condition and provenance from a private collection.
Description from the seller
Chokwe Mask – Angola.
This remarkable mask stands out for an unusual typology and a particularly emphatic character. The face with powerful volumes, marked by deep brow ridges, a angular nose and a mouth widely half-open, revealing finely sculpted dentition, gives it a striking presence. Geometric scarifications, the precisely incised coiffure, as well as the original metal rings in the ears further reinforce its authenticity. The beautiful dark brown patina, polished and deeply nourished by use, bears witness to a long ritual life.
Among the Chokwe, masks accompanied initiation ceremonies, prestige dances and rituals related to ancestors. While this piece sits within the stylistic repertoire of this great Central African people, its singular expression and its sculptural treatment clearly set it apart from the most common models. Preserved with its old peripheral fitting, this specimen is a work of character, rare in its physiognomy and highly representative of the richness of traditional Chokwe art.
