Masque de main, a Metoko mask from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, provenance Collection privée, 31 cm high, 1 cm wide and 1 cm deep.
Description from the seller
Rare and ancient Metoko mask from the Democratic Republic of Congo
This traditional work presents a striking, almost spectral expression, characteristic of certain ancient ritual masks of the Metoko peoples from the forest regions of Congo.
The deeply sunken face, pierced eyes, and toothed mouth give the piece a powerful and mysterious presence. The hairstyle topped with old fibers and feathers further emphasizes its ceremonial and initiatory character.
Metoko masks were used in rituals related to initiatory societies, ancestral cults, and ceremonies of spiritual protection. They were involved especially in rite of passage ceremonies and certain practices aimed at maintaining the balance between the visible and invisible worlds.
Very beautiful antiquity visible through the deep patina, natural wear, and signs of ritual use. An authentic sculpture with strong evocative power, remaining in a remarkable original condition.
Piece collected long ago and kept for several generations in a European family collection before being entrusted to sale.
A tribal art object that is particularly rare and expressive, aimed at collectors of ancient and authentic African art.
