Ngombe mask from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, provenance private collection.
Description from the seller
The Ngombe of the Democratic Republic of the Congo developed a powerful art linked to initiatory societies and communal rites. Their masks intervened in ceremonies of justice, spiritual protection, and ritual dances intended to communicate with the ancestors. Sculpted with expressive and symbolic forms, these masks embodied protective spirits or figures of authority, playing an essential role in the social and spiritual balance of the village.
