Description from the seller

Rare statue in very dark hard wood, heavy, with a magnificent patina, originating from Liberia
Sold with base
For collectors

Dan sculptures are often linked to spirituality, initiation rites, or ancestor cults.
Some statues represented protective spirits or were used in fertility rites.
The Dan, numbering about 350,000, are a sub-tribe belonging to the Dan-Nguere. They inhabit eastern Liberia, Guinea (Conakry), and Ivory Coast. The social and spiritual foundation of the Dan-Nguere is the secret society Poro, which means in the Temmé language "sierra". The Dan live in a wooded region in the south and an area covered by savannah to the north. Before secret societies united them toward the beginning of the century, the Dan lived in autonomous villages led by a chief elected for his wealth and social status."} }{
