STATUE YAKA-SUKU from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, associated with the Yaka-Suku tribe, carved in wood, 48 cm tall, dating to the late 20th century and sold with a stand.
Description from the seller
Origin: Democratic Republic of the Congo
Tribe name: Yaka-suku
Material: Wood
Dimension: 48 cm
Shipping method: Colissimo within 24-48h, open.
This decorative piece is a ritual anthropomorphic bifacial statuette, characteristic of Yaka art (Democratic Republic of the Congo).
Here is a detailed description of its attributes:
Structure and Face
Double face (Biface): The statuette features two opposite faces, a characteristic often symbolizing clairvoyance, multidirectional protection, or the duality between the world of the living and that of the ancestors.
Sculpted features: We observe almond-shaped, elongated eyes, a straight, pointed nose, and an imposing multi-tiered circular headdress, typical of high social ranks or ritual functions among the Yaka.
Body and ritual materials
Posture: The body is stylized with arms folded to form right angles, hands drawn back toward the chest or chin.
Added elements:
Fibers and bindings: The central part is surrounded by a mass of plant fibers and bindings, suggesting the object served as a receptacle for magico-religious substances (biteki).
Feathers: Remains of feathers are attached to the side, a common addition to activate the object's spiritual power during healing or protection ceremonies.
This statuette is a powerful object, probably used by a diviner (nganga) for the protection of the lineage or to conjure spells. Its visual strength lies in this accumulation of organic materials that complement the initial wood sculpture.
