Black opals occur, just like their differently colored counterparts, as a spherical to bulbous mass with no recognizable crystal structure. Their beauty usually reveals itself only after the polishing of this very mass. Characteristic for this form of opals is their opalescence, which shines in intense rainbow flashes. Moreover, the host rock of the opal here is dark, grayish to black, which gave it this name.

Black opals form, like other opals, from silica-rich fluids that crystallize in sedimentary or volcanic rocks. Their characteristic shimmer is due to water inclusions inside this mineral.
