AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Spectacular Art Deco vase from 1933-36 attributed to Pierre D’Avesn (1901-1990) for Daum, France.
Amber-colored vase with etched surface and graceful handles reminiscent of Lalique designs.

The vase is unsigned, but it is generally believed that the design is by Pierre D’Avesn, who during that period worked at Daum Frères, France.

The vase is in very good used condition with normal signs of wear. We note a few flea-bites but no chips and no stains. Included air bubbles and glass threads are typical for the production methods of the time.

The vase is about 18 cm tall, 23 cm wide and has a diameter of 14 cm.

Pierre d’Avesn, real name Pierre Girre, was born in 1901 and studied sculpture at the prestigious Ecole des Arts Decoratifs in Paris.

At only 14 years old, he joined the Rene Lalique firm, where he learned the art of glassblowing and glass casting in molds. d’Avesn worked about 12 years at Lalique and designed a number of Lalique’s most famous Art Deco pieces.

In 1927 d’Avesn joined Daum as a designer and he oversaw the production of Verreries D’Art Lorrain in Lunéville (formerly the Croismare glass factory), which Daum had acquired that year. Daum aimed to capture a larger share of the lucrative Art Deco glass market, including the United States. Using the new mold-blown technology they produced Lalique look-alikes and, curiously, also cheaper versions of their own high-end glass. With Lalique and Schneider as competitors, Daum sought new sales channels, luxury department stores and large retailers, separated from the prestigious Daum segment."
