We offer at auction a fascinating late 19th-century Russian icon of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker (Святой Николай Чудотворец), one of the most venerated saints of Eastern Orthodox tradition.

The icon depicts Saint Nicholas in half-figure. He is dressed in finely detailed episcopal vestments, with his right hand raised in a gesture of blessing. His face, painted in a traditional Russian style and visible through the riza opening, emanates serenity and wisdom.

The most distinctive element of this lot is the magnificent brass riza that covers the icon. The riza is an ornamental metal cover designed to protect and honor the sacred image, leaving exposed only the face and hands of the saint. This particular riza is a work of art in itself:
• It features rich engraving and repoussé work with intricate geometric and floral motifs that adorn the saint’s vestments, the background, and the outer frame.
• It is complemented by a imposing pierced halo surrounding Saint Nicholas’s head, giving him a radiant appearance.
• The bottom part of the frame includes an inscription in ancient ecclesiastical Cyrillic, identifying the saint as "Святой Николай Чудотворец" (Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker).
