- Grade: MS62 (GBCA).
Bronze coin of large denomination corresponding to the Tenpō Tsūhō series, issued during the late Edo period as a measure to alleviate economic difficulties of the Tokugawa shogunate. It features the characteristic oval shape with a square central hole, inspired by the traditional Chinese monetary tradition. The obverse shows the vertical inscription “Tenpō Tsūhō” in a robust calligraphic style, while the reverse indicates the value “當百” (equivalent to one hundred mon), accompanied by a stylized mark beneath. The specimen retains well-defined relief with crisp details in the characters, surfaces with original texture and a homogeneous brown patina with slight areas of green oxidation. A solid strike is evident with minor irregularities typical of the casting process, faithfully representing this type of circulating coinage in premodern Japan.
