Nikon FA 35mm SLR camera, tested and working, produced between 1983 and 1988.

AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

For sale this Nikon FA which, considering its age, is in beautiful overall condition.

The Nikon FA is a 135 mm SLR manufactured between 1983 and 1988. It was the first camera to offer matrix metering (AMP 5 zones) and TTL flash metering.

Main technical features  :

- Focal-plane shutter with titanium curtains (This is a vertical travel mechanism designed by Nikon and made by Copal. Titanium curtains are more resistant than the aluminum versions, which extends the shutter life. They offer faster response and better mechanical stability, allowing the maximum speed of 1/4000 s without loss of accuracy. This same shutter is found on the early Nikon FM2)
- Shutter speed : 1 s to 1/4000 s (higher than competitors of the time), bulb mode
- Flash sync : 1/250 s
- Exposure modes : program, aperture priority, shutter priority, manual
- Metering: matrix (5 zones) and center-weighted
- Weight : 625 g
- Dimensions : 92 × 142.5 × 64.5 mm

It is the last mechanical Nikon body, with formidable reliability, that integrated a metering matrix new for its time, and that can operate without a battery. It accompanied all the great photojournalists of the era, just like the Nikon FM, FM2, F2, F3. It is a high‑quality body that is considered one of the best, if not the best, of its generation.

It received the Camera Grand Prix 1984 in Japan, testifying to its technical excellence and impact on the industry.

It was serviced by a professional technician in January 2018 (invoice provided). I bought it in March 2019. I hardly used it.

I mainly desired to own such a body. I used a formidable Nikon FM in another life, and this FA is its ultimate evolution, the reason for my purchase.
