Canon P "Populaire" 35mm rangefinder camera, physically very good and tested and in working order, with an M39 lens mount and dating to circa 1958–1961.
Description from the seller
The Canon P is a rangefinder camera launched on the market in 1958 and produced until 1961.
P for Populaire, because Canon wanted to produce a simplified rangefinder at a lower cost. And it was a commercial success with 87,875 units sold.
Its advantages:
- LTM 39 mm screw mount
- Rangefinder combined with automatic parallax correction with frame lines for 35, 50, and 100 mm focal lengths
- Cocking by lever, steel shutter delivering speeds from 1 second to 1/1000 s, X and M flash synchronization at 1/25 s
- Hinged back
- Rewind crank integrated into the top cap
It’s a beautiful Canon P in perfect working order except speeds 1 and 2 are very slow.
The body is in very good cosmetic condition.
You have a body with no plastic, only solid metal. The camera is therefore not light, but it fits well in the hand, is very well balanced, and when paired with a so‑called fast lens (50 f/1.2 and the famous 0.95), it’s a delight for adjusting settings.
This camera is part of my collection, which I am reorganizing at the moment.
