Description from the seller

Wooden cup bearer - Luba - DRC

Luba wooden carved cup bearer, originating from the Democratic Republic of Congo. The cup-bearer figures of the Luba people occupied an important place in royal traditions and cultural practices related to power, memory and the prestige of chiefs. This piece illustrates the know-how of Luba sculptors through a balanced composition, refined features and a strong symbolic presence. The woodwork highlights harmonious volumes and great mastery of form, bearing witness to the cultural and social significance of these objects in their original context.

The surface of the wood shows an aged patina as well as natural traces of use that reinforce the antique character of the object. Through the elegance of its lines, the delicacy of its expression and its visual impact, this sculpture also finds a place in a contemporary interior, where it becomes a remarkable decorative piece, appreciated for its sculptural character and its understated aesthetics.
