Rare 19th‑century tabletop brass refractor telescope with ebonised wood tripod, 45 mm achromatic objective, two extendable draw tubes, terrestrial eyepiece, magnifications up to 60x for astronomy and 40x for terrestrial, complete with original wooden box and instructions, in excellent condition and tested and functioning.

Rare Tabletop Refracting Telescope – Late 19th Century – Brass, Ebenized Wood, and Bakelite – Complete with Original Box and Instructions
Description of the Lot
Splendid example of an astronomical and terrestrial lunette dating to around 1880–1910, of French manufacture (Paris area, known for the optical excellence of the era).
This instrument is not only a collectible piece but a refined example of “library” scientific instrumentation from the Belle Époque.
Technical Details:
Objective: High-quality 45 mm achromatic lens, composed of Crown and Flint glass lenses (as specified in the instructions).
Materials: Main brass tube (verni copper brass) with a magnificent original patina; folding tripod in hardened/ebonized black wood.
Configuration: The telescope is equipped with two extending tubes (coulants) for focusing and an integrated terrestrial eyepiece.
Magnification: Up to 40x for terrestrial use and 60x for astronomical use (with dedicated eyepiece).
Accessories and Condition:
Original Box: Solid wood with shaped joints to perfectly house the instrument and accessories. The hinges and construction show signs of age confirming its authenticity.
Rare Documentation: Includes the original era instruction sheet, an item extremely difficult to obtain that significantly increases the lot’s historical value.
Condition: The item shows excellent original condition. The tube mechanics are smooth. Lenses intact and without deep scratches (a light professional cleaning is recommended if intended for use). The patina of age has not been removed to preserve its historical identity.
