Antique neoclassical wooden Apothecary Pedestal, hand-painted in faux-marble with the Hygieia Bowl motif, dating from 1860–1910, made in France, 116 cm high, top 45 cm wide and 34 cm deep, weight 14 kg, in good condition with minor signs of age.
Description from the seller
Rare Antique Apothecary Pillar – Hand-painted Faux-Marble with the Hygieia Scale – Late 19th / Early 20th Century
An exceptional and highly decorative antique object with a fascinating medical history. This monumental wooden pedestal (column) is entirely hand-painted in a very skilled marble imitation (faux-marble), flawlessly reproducing the depth and veins of precious marble (such as Siena and Breccia marble). Around the panels, hand-painted frames are applied to evoke the illusion of inlaid marble panels (scagliola).
The absolute centerpiece of this pillar is the hand-painted front panel, featuring a refined grisaille-like depiction of the Hygieia Scale (the bowl with the curled snake on top). This symbol has been the international emblem for pharmacy since the 18th century. The pillar has therefore decades of service as a prominent interior piece or storefront object in a chic, historical apothecary (officina).
Thanks to the expert wood construction, the pillar has the monumental, classical look of solid natural stone, yet, at a weight of 14 kg, remains manageable and less vulnerable to movement. An absolute top piece for collectors of medical heritage, antique apothecary letters, or lovers of a unique cabinet de curiosités interior.
Condition and Patina
The pillar is in gorgeous, authentic condition with a sublime lived character. The layers of paint show a beautiful natural craquelure and light, characteristic wear on the corners and edges. The old varnish layers have mellowed beautifully with time, contributing to the unmistakable historical appearance of the object. The wooden core and internal construction are solid and show authentic, old mounting traces.
