Description from the seller
Yurie Nagashima rises to national prominence in Japan after receiving the second annual Urbanart prize awarded by Parco Gallery in Tokyo in 1993 for a series of photographs featuring herself and her nude family. Nagashima was named to the prize by Nobuyoshi Araki, one of the best-known photographers in Japan. At the time, Nagashima was still a student at the Musashino Art University in Tokyo, from which she graduated in 1995 with a BA in Visual Communication Design. In 1995, Nagashima organized a two-person exhibition with American photographer Catherine Opie at Parco Gallery, Tokyo. Following this meeting with Opie, Nagashima undertook an MFA at the California Institute of the Arts under her tutelage. Nagashima has published numerous and important photographic monographs dealing with family, sex, identity, and sexuality. In the West, she is compared to American photographer Nan Goldin. In some of her photographs, Nagashima tests the public’s perceptions of obscenity and censorship in Japan (in) [4]. Nagashima is represented by the SCAI The Bathhouse Gallery in Tokyo, where she has had several solo and group exhibitions. In addition to her work as a photographer and as an assistant in photography, Nagashima published in 2009 (under the title Senaka no kioku, which means “Memories of the Back”) a series of biographical stories from her childhood.
