AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Small Amsterdam School (style) Accent Table with Carved Legs, 1920s–1940s
Painted wood, layered historic finish

A small and highly original accent table with clear Amsterdam School roots, full of character, handwork and mystery. Its exact provenance is unknown, but the piece has the unmistakable charm of an object made with care, imagination and no shortage of patience.

The table has a compact square top with softly rounded corners, standing on four elaborately carved legs. These legs are the real theatre of the piece: each one is cut with a repeated geometric pattern of notches, facets and raised blocks, They give the table a rhythmic, slightly folkloric quality, somewhere between Amsterdam School woodwork and Arts & Crafts/ Folkart

The base is constructed with crossed lower stretchers, giving the table a stable stance. From each side, the legs create a different play of shadows and profiles. It is a small piece, but an expressive one.

The surface has a wonderful layered history. Over time the table has received several coats of paint, including visible traces of purple and green. The final layer was faux bois/wood-grain painted finish, also known in Dutch as houting or houtimitatie: a decorative paint technique used to imitate the look of wood.

The table has been carefully restored without removing the history of the piece. The old paint layers have been stabilised so that the surface is no longer flaking. It now has a soft feel throughout and has been protected with a layer of transparent French wax, giving it a gentle, natural sheen while preserving the timeworn character.

A perfect little accent piece: useful as a side table, plant stand, pedestal or object in its own right. It brings originality, colour and a touch of Amsterdam School atmosphere.

Dimensions:
30 x 30 cm
Height: 49 cm

Approx. 11.8 x 11.8 in
Height: 19.3 in

Condition:
Carefully restored. Historic layered painted surface preserved and stabilised. The paint is no longer flaking. Soft surface throughout, protected with French wax. Visible age, wear, old paint layers, scratches and surface marks remain present and are part of the character of the piece.
