Antique jardinière from the second half of the 19th century, in Neobarock/Louis XV Revival style, made of patinated bronze and gilded metal on an alabaster/onyx base.
Description from the seller
Exclusive worktop centerpiece from the French Belle Époque of the 19th century!
Shown is a large-format jardinière featuring a putto and a shell set in a coral reef (see photos)! A striking work of art from Parisian Belle Époque of the 19th century!
This impressive jardinière embodies the decorative opulence of the Belle Époque and unites figurative art, natural motifs, and luxurious material effects into an extraordinary ensemble.
The composition is borne by a finely worked putto (Amor), who leans in vibrant motion against a monumental shell and presents a fruit garland. The depiction is rich in detail and testifies to the high quality of the modeling—typical of the refined art production of the late 19th century.
The shell-shaped bowl with a wide, flaring rim is crafted in the Louis XV style and underscores the elegant, playful character of the object. The scene is completed by stylized coral forms, which add depth and a maritime grace to the work.
The warm, lustrous surface in fire-gilded finish shows an authentic patina developed over decades, which particularly highlights the sculptural effect. The pedestal, made of finely mottled alabaster (onyx marble), provides an elegant contrast and at the same time gives the object weight and stability.
• Date of origin: late 19th century
• Era: Belle Époque / Historicism
• Style: Neobaroque / Louis XV Revival
• Material: patinated bronze & gilded metal (spelter) on alabaster/onyx pedestal
• Origin: France - Paris
Condition: overall very good, age-appropriate condition with lovely patina. An aged surface is present but does not impair the overall aesthetic (see photos)!
This jardinière is a representative decorative object with extraordinary presence—ideal as a central display piece in classical interiors, on consoles, or as a focal point in upscale living and business spaces.
A characterful original from the Belle Époque—decorative, timely, and with enduring aura.
