A 19th‑century porcelain perfume bottle from France (circa 1850–1900), in good condition with minor signs of age, measuring about 17 cm tall and 7.5 cm wide, featuring hand‑painted polychrome floral decoration and gilt detailing.
Description from the seller
Beautiful antique dressing-table piece, with very distinctive features that help us identify its style, probable origin and period.
Type of Object: Perfume bottle / dressing bottle with original cap.
Material: Hard-paste porcelain.
Format: Body with a rectangular or octagonal cross-section (with chamfered corners), sloped shoulders that narrow toward a cylindrical neck with a gilded and slightly flared lip. The cap (case/stuff) has a flat circular top and an unglazed conical base to ensure a firm friction-fit inside the neck.
Decoration: * Presents rich hand-painted polychrome enamel decoration with floral motifs at the center (highlighting old-rose pink roses, tulips or wildflowers and foliage) inserted within diamond/lozenge-shaped reserves.
The exterior background beyond the reserves is decorated with a thick glaze in a deep rose-pompadour (or magenta/light pink) shade, highlighted by delicate gilded arabesques, volutes and scrolls.
The chamfered corners feature a vertical border with geometric and stylized floral patterns in gold on the white porcelain background.
Origin Likely
Region/Country: France or Germany.
Style/Manufacture: The design and color palette strongly echo the prestigious style of the French royal porcelain manufactory at Sèvres (famous for its colored grounds such as Rose Pompadour and floral reserves). However, given the porcelain base may be completely smooth, without a visible mark, showing only the body and mold seam, and the type of glaze on the flowers, it is very likely to be a piece from Paris (Vieux Paris / Paris Porcelain) or a manufactory from Thuringia/Germany (such as Sitzendorf, Dresden or Thuringia) that produced high-quality decorative porcelains inspired by Sèvres models for the affluent European market.
Century and Dating
Era: Second half of the 19th century (c. 1860 – 1890).
Context: Belongs to the Historicism / Eclecticism period (often associated with the Napoleon III style in France or late Victorian). During this era there was a huge revival of 18th-century styles (Rococo and Louis XV), where perfume bottles with pink, pale blue or bottle-green grounds and gilded and floral decorations were the pinnacle of refinement in feminine grooming items.
Condition (Photo Notes)
The piece shows natural, historical wear to the gilding, mainly on the neck and outer edges due to years of handling.
The base of the bottle and the cap insertion show darkening with time, typical of porcelains that were in real use (accumulation of residues or old perfume oils).
A small manufacturing defect or slight glaze flaw on one of the upper corners (a small dark indentation) is noticeable, which reinforces the artisanal character of the painting and firing of the period.
Height: 17 cm
Width: 7.5/7.5 cm
