Description from the seller

Rare antique Russian icon “St. Antipas” from the 19th century.

Hand-painted with egg tempera on a wooden panel with a chalk ground.

Saint Antipas is regarded as the patron saint of dentists.

Typical method of icon painting in 18th- and 19th-century Tsarist Russia. The motif is quite rare and very popular in the Orthodox Church.

This is an Old Believer icon. The painting is masterfully and intricately executed (see photos). Perfectly coordinated color contrasts and successful shading. The painting contains very authentic craquelure (crackling) (see photos).

Minimal partial restorations and corrections are present (see photos). Especially expressive and striking is the face of the Saint (see photos).

Top and bottom are inlaid with cross-splines. Stable and solid wooden panel. The icon is in good condition with typical age-related signs of wear (see photos).

An icon for collectors and connoisseurs of the subject!

All details are clearly legible in the photos. Photos are part of the description.
