Description from the seller
Directed by Tadasuke Akiyama. Self-published, 1973.
Okinawa ’73 is a self-published photobook produced in 1973 by students of the Tokyo College of Photography, the year after Okinawa’s reversion to Japan. The project was supervised by photographer and instructor Tadasuke Akiyama (1941-2013).
As part of Akiyama’s event seminar, the students travelled to Okinawa and photographed everyday life, culture, people and landscapes in black and white. The book is a collective work reflecting a raw and socially conscious perspective influenced by the Provoke generation.
The book is distinctive for its bolt-bound format and rough, Xerox-like printing, which give it a strong handmade and documentary quality.
This project continued from 1973 to 1981, resulting in a total of nine volumes in the Okinawa series. In 2024, an archival exhibition of related materials, including negatives, original prints and reports, was held at the school, bringing renewed attention to the project.
An important and historically valuable photobook, both as a record of photographic education and as a documentary practice in post-reversion Okinawa.
Condition:
Partial loss to the spine, with sunning to the spine and front cover.
SHIPPING
Shipped via EMS or DHL. Delivery is available within one week, with a tracking number provided.
